Based on the controversial novel Sanctuary by William Faulkner, this pre-code drama film starred Miriam Hopkins as Temple Drake, a hedonistic woman who kills her rapist and admits to it during trial to save a man who is falsely accused. Despite being made by Paramount Pictures, it has been owned by 20th Century Fox since 1961 after Darryl F. Zanuck acquired the rights to the film in order to make a CinemaScope film version of the novel. Despite this, the film remained unreleased on home video until 2019 when Fox licensed it to The Criterion Collection.
