Thought about this the other day. I'm sure everyone here has "WTF" questions about old cartoons...just as I'm sure someone here has answers.

Me,for starters:

That length of tape on the end of cats' tails in the old MGM/Hanna-barbara cartoons. For some reason, Almost every time there's a second cat getting in Tom's way, he has a length of white tape wrapped around the end of the tail.

That horrid,HORRID period of Scooby-Doo when Scrappy Doo had come along and Fred,Velma and Daphne disappeared. (If you ever look at the title screen of each episode, you see them in profile running away from what appears to be a haunted house.

I liked scrappy doo back at the time. I haven't watched any scrappy toons recently though, so I don't know if my opinion might have changed.

I think the tape on the tails was supposed to mean that the cat was a tough guy, ie the tape was medical tape to patch up wounds from past fights.

Yes, the "tough guy" cat in the old MGM Tom and Jerry series had the missing end of his tail re-attached with surgical tape from a recent cat fight. This was suppose to be a visual short-hand for a mean alley cat character.

I've never been much of a Scobby Doo fan since I stopped following the series after 1970. Like you I found it odd that H-B would drop the other human characters and add a second dog character. If it was done for humor I'd say it was a mistake.

The original Scooby Doo was a SatAM ratings surprise for CBS and H-B. No one at the network expected the huge surge in ratings due to all of the adults and teens tuning in for the "mystery/who done it" hook of the show. That genre added just enough to each storyline to make the original Scooby Doo the surprise hit of the 1969 SatAM lineup for the networks.

For reasons that are a real "mystery" to me H-B dropped their winning formula in favor of comedy (silly) standard cartoon content after the Scooby Doo Movie, hour long format.

I'm another person who hated the fact that Velma, Fred, and Daphne was dropped (although, she Daph was readded later). I've always wondered why they got rid of them.

As a kid, I did love pretty much everything Scooby Doo and I never did have a prob with Scrappy. I guess, for me, it was nice seeing a brave dog for a change, compared to that chicken, Scooby.

Going slightly back on topic, why bring back Daphne and not Fred and Velma?

Well they needed at least one girl, so that cuts out Fred and I guess back in the day they didn't think a nerd like Velma would get as many viewers.

...and sorry if I'm getting off tangent, but while we're talking about Scooby, Scrappy and Daphne, but I was wondering if anyone remembered Flim Flam, he was just another one of those characters who disappeared into the realm of cartoon obscurity.

The 13 ghosts of scooby doo.

Personally, I never liked fred, he was just an obnoxious know-it-all. Daphne (in her classic depiction, though much less so in more recent depictions) is just a bubble-heeded bimbo. In the classic cartoons she served no purpose beyond eyecandy & some "princess" who could get kidnapped so that the "heroes" could rescue her. Velma > Daphne

Yeah, I think if we were ever to take Scooby-Doo chronology as serious as say, Trekkies, 13 ghosts of scooby doo with it's high tek red Mystery Machine, annoying little kid who reminded me of Short Round of Indiana Jones fame, and the Vincent Price wannabe...should be quietly forgotten like Highlander 2.

Velma was hot, bite your tounge!

While we're asking questions, here's one:

What do you think of "Dexter's Rude Removal", fan fact or fan fiction?

"Dexter's Rude Removal" was supposedly an episode of Dexter's Lab created for adult audiences and was only premiered at special events/parties. One of the only documented occasions being comiccon 1998.

Supposedly the plot revolved around Dexter's latest invention that was supposed to extract the rudeness from him and DeeDee. Something goes wrong and results in the creation of their evil twins. The evil twins go to the lunch table where they proceed to curse each other out vulgarly. And then it ends with them reuniting with their "good halves" and Mom coming upstairs with a bar of soap to which Dexter responds with "the f-bomb"

I actually liked Flim Flam. I actually liked The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo. Only thing I hated about it was that it was so darn comedic. It had the most potential for being a bit dark given the nature of the show's premise. Too bad it ended up being all annoyingly goofy. I guess for me, the best series will always be the first season of Scooby Doo Where Are You. I can still watch that without cringing.

                                  there's a thought!

Between the live action movies and the cyber chase video game, all we ever got to see of all the 'retro' SD villains were from the mid-70's era, wonder why nothing from the 69-70 season?

Yeah and I thought the inclusion of Vincent Price was epic, a lot better than most of the celebrities they got to guest star over the years. Too bad they didn't have him in the Scooby Doo cartoons more often.

Hope it's not to late to jump in on this, but all my school friends back in the day assumed that the Flintstones was an
H-B animated re-worked version of the Honeymooners since they both start with the same "working class" premise for the main characters.

So if Fred Flintstone is Jackie Gleason's Ralph Kramden that would make Wilma Flintstone Audrey Meadow's character Alice Kramden, including Audrey's unique "black almond" eyes.
