WNEP-TV in Scranton-Wilkes Barres presently broadcasts 41 hours of locally produced newscasts each week (with 6½ hours each weekday, 4½ hours on Saturdays and 4 hours on Sundays). It runs its newscasts under the branding: Newswatch 16. In the station's beginning in 1953, the original newscast titles were known as "Your Esso Reporter". In 1958, the newscasts titles were rebranded as "The Pennsylvania Report". In 1961, Channel 16 rebranded its newscasts titles as "WNEP-TV News". In 1965, they changed its newscasts titles as "WNEP-TV News Service". In 1968, WNEP rebranded its newscast titles as "Newswatch 16". In the late 1970s, Mike Stevens joined the station as a reporter (and he would go on to become a long-time Down The Pennsylvania Road reporter). In September 1980, Bob Reynolds joined WNEP as reporter (where he would remain for nearly 35 years). On January 12, 1981, WNEP debuted its noon weekday newscast (originally titled as Midday 16). Also in 1981, Tom Clark joined the station as lead weathercaster. One year later, in 1982, his wife, Noreen joined the station as weathercast for the weekend evening newscasts. Also in 1982, Nolan Johannes joined WNEP as main anchor of the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. weeknight newscasts. In 1984, WNEP operated its new news helicopter, known as "Skycam 16" until being decommissioned in February 2009. Also in 1984, Marissa Burke joined the station as co-anchor of the weekday morning and noon weekday newscasts. In September 1987, Channel 16 launched its 5 p.m. half-hour weekday evening newscast. In March 1996, after 14 years as WNEP's lead news anchor, Nolan Johannes retired. In June 1998, Andy Palumbo joined the station as producer of the weekend morning newscasts, and one year later, in 1999, he was promoted to weekend morning news anchor. Also in 1998, Frank Andrews (who joined the station in 1980) left after 18 years as anchor/reporter. In May 1999, Scott Shaffer joined the station as weekend evening news anchor and weekday reporter. In June 2003, Jon Meyer joined WNEP as a Luzerne County beat reporter. In June 2007, Mindy Ramsey joined the station as weekday morning & noon anchor. On September 8, 2009, WNEP launched its 4 p.m. weekday newscast, known as "Newswatch 16 at 4". On February 10, 2011, WNEP premiered a new HD-ready news set, beginning with the 4 p.m. newscast. On July 9, 2011, WNEP began broadcasting its local newscasts in high definition starting with the 6 p.m. newscast, becoming the first station in the Scranton–Wilkes-Barres television market to begin offering local newscasts in high definition. Also in July 2011, Stacy Lange joined the station as investigative reporter. In early September 2011, WNEP expanded its 4 p.m. weekday newscast to a full hour with an addition half-hour at 4:30 p.m. In October 2016, after 32 years as anchor/reporter, Marissa Burke officially retired from WNEP. In November 2017, Chelsea Strub joined the station as a weekend reporter. In June 2019, she started full-time as Luzerne County beat reporter. In July 2019, Stacy Lange was promoted to weekend evening news anchor. On March 4, 2020, the station began using Tegna's standardized news graphics. In November 2020, Lisa Washington joined WNEP as anchor. In February 2022, Stacy Lange became co-anchor of the 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. weekday newscasts. In July 2023, Melissa Steininger joined the station as Action 16 Investigatives reporter.
