KVVU-TV Newscasts
Debut: January 01, 1977

KVVU-TV in Henderson-Las Vegas presently broadcasts 78½ hours of locally produced newscasts each week (with 14½ hours each weekday and three hours each on Saturdays and Sundays). Long before becoming a Fox affiliate television station, KVVU-TV's news programming consisted solely of daily news updates during the station's syndicated programming from the 1970s and 1980s. In 1989, Channel 5 debuted its first weekday morning newscast: "A.M. Southern Nevada with Deborah Campbell". But in June 1998, a real news department was established by KVVU-TV; it began producing a 10 p.m. newscast, the Las Vegas market's first local newscast in prime time, the program originated as a weeknight-only half hour newscast. But in June 2002, that broadcast expanded to Saturday and Sunday evenings, followed by the expansion of the newscast to an hour-long program one year later (in 2003). For the first couple of years, that newscast was solo anchored by Angelica Urquijo; the station at the time originally did not have a weather anchor or full-time sports anchor, the sports segment was pre-recorded with voice-over work done by boxing analyst Al Bernstein. In July 1999, the station added a weekday morning newscast that originally aired from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. The following year (in 2000), the program was expanded by 90 minutes with the addition of a news block from 5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. On September 10, 2007, Channel 5's news programming was expanded again, this time with the debut of an hour-long block newscasts during the 5 p.m. hour; with the expansion; KVVU-TV became the only local station in the Las Vegas television market carrying a newscast in the 5:30 p.m. timeslot. One year later on August 4, 2008, KVVU-TV debuted a half-hour weeknight-only newscast at 11 p.m. On March 7, 2011, the weekday morning newscast was expanded to 4½ hours, with its start time at 4:30 a.m. On July 9, 2012, Channel 5 debuted a half-hour 6 p.m. weeknight newscast. On April 6, 2020, KVVU-TV added a half-hour 1 p.m. weekday newscast, making it one of the few television stations in the United States airing a 1 p.m. weekday newscast. On that same day, KVVU-TV expanded its 11 p.m. weeknight newscast to an hour. On Septmeber 5, 2022, KVVU-TV added an hour-long 2 p.m. weekday newscast, becoming the first Fox affiliate television station in the United States to air newscasts in that timeslot. Afternoon and evening newscasts now run weekdays from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
