The Doctors began in a experimental anthology format with its April 1, 1963 premiere. On March 2, 1964, it became a traditional continuing serial, like all the other American daytime television dramas on air at the time. For most of the series, storylines resolved around Hope Memorial Hospital and it patriarch chief of staff Dr. Matt Powers (James Pritchett).
