It has been five years since Mia Thermopolis has first been told to take the throne of Genovia. She has just graduated from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School and is returning to Genovia, where she will wait for her grandmother to abdicate the throne so she can take it. Upon turning 21, Mia has to seek a husband, and she finds a handsome man after a somewhat dysfunctional dance. In the course of the next few days, Mia and her new bachelor must fall in love and get married so she can take the throne, but that may be thwarted by a member of the Genovian Parliament who wants to steal Mia's crown.
