Being Human
Release: January 01, 1994

Being Human is a 1994 epic fantasy drama film written and directed by Bill Forsyth, and starring Robin Williams. The film portrays the experience of a single human soul, portrayed by Williams, through various incarnations. Williams is the only common actor throughout the stories that span man's history on Earth. An attempt on director-screenwriter Bill Forsyth's part to depict by visual means the ordinariness of life throughout the ages, Being Human is deliberately slow in its pace in order to emphasize how slow life often is. The structure is one of vignette-like character studies of one man (actually at least four distinct men, all with the same soul) who keeps making the same relationships and mistakes throughout his lifetimes.

Female Storyteller: "[first] This is the story of a story. Once upon a time: There was this story, and the story said to itself, 'How should I begin?'." "What, in the dark with a man and a woman, in a story that is still to tell itself?" "That's good. 'Far away', so you know the place is close to your own heart. 'Once' is nice, so we know that it always happens. Hmm, Once there was this hero…" "Some man then; Any man. Say: a man, a woman, and some children; Don't forget the children."
Hector: "Try the usual way." "Well, you've got to start somewhere. Say: 'Long, Long ago…', or 'Far, far away…', or 'Another time in a different, distant country…'; or just 'Once…' ." [wryly] "Some hero."
