Young Maggie Peyton is the youngest member of a family of racing enthusiasts. After her dad takes he to the junkyard to pick an old car as a graduation present, she winds up picking Herbie who has been towed there after several race loses lead to the speculation he is too beat up to race. After Herbie is tuned up by Maggie's mechanic friend she is talked into racing NASCAR champion Trip Murphy, and decides to take up professional racing with Herbie.
