Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream was started in 1953 in Glendale, California (here, in the U.S.) by Burton "Burt" Baskin and Irvine "Irv" Robbins, after the merger of their respective ice cream parlors, Burton's Ice Cream and Snowbird Ice Cream.
The "31" concept for the Baskin-Robbins stores after the 1953 merger was devised by the ad agency Carson-Roberts (now Ogilvy & Mather), and it was to signify the flavor of every day of the month.
The logo's original pink and brown colors represented the cherry and chocolate flavors respectively, and further represented in polka dots for a circus-style feel (along with the typeface for the "31") beloved of young children.
B-R's nationwide expansion occurred after 1959, and went international during the '70s, establishing locations in Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Australia.

I remember going to them as a kid. You would sit in those desk like chairs. They used to let you take the large empty containers that the ice cream came in. I used to get a double scoop cone with two flavors: mint chip & chocolate chip or orange & lime sherbet. My parents used buy the large container of jamoca almond fudge to take home. It was so big we had to keep it in the downstairs freezer.
We've still got one in St. Louis
I remember the one in the town i grew up in. Loved the atmosphere, but rarely went there because the prices were too high (we wuz poor peeplez). The only time we went there was when we found a coupon for a free scoop. We would much more frequently go to a local soft serve stand (I don't remember what brand/company it was), or in somewhat later years, the dairy queen resteraunt that opened in town.
I remember they used to have a single scoop ice cream cone upside-down and drew a clown face on the scoop and a hat on the cone with icing.
They also at one time had mini baseball hat bowls.

When I was growing up it was a tradition that the kids' birthday cakes would always be ice cream cakes, and Baskin Robbins was the ice cream place in town. With the cake would come a coupon for a cone or cup for the birthday kid to use later.
Sometime I think around the age of 6, I threw one hell of a tantrum. No idea what it was about, but I swore I would never eat dessert again, and ripped up the coupon into the smallest pieces I could.
