God, The Devil And Bob
USA, NBC (Vanity Logo Productions/Carsey-Werner Productions/NBC Studios) , Animated Sitcom, colour, 2000
Starring: James Garner, Alan Cumming, French Stewart
God is reaching the end of his tether with Earth people. They have ruined his great creation to such an extent that he is contemplating its destruction. Such a move is openly encouraged by his friendly nemesis, the Devil. At the eleventh hour, God decides to invite the Devil to select a random human; if they can find no redeemable good in him then God will destroy the world. As they just happen to be in a bar at the time, the Devil chooses Bob Allman, a car-factory worker who is relaxing over a few beers. Thus the fate of the world rests upon the shoulders of one 'regular guy' who has plenty enough trouble keeping his own life on track. Although no one else can see the two supernatural beings, God and the Devil manifest themselves to Bob in human guise, to check on his progress, and, in the Devil's case, tempt him into some wrongdoing. The human manifestation of God is a beer-guzzling, grizzled ex-hippie - a warm and friendly soul with a laid-back attitude and soothing voice; the Devil is a cocktail-guzzling, smooth-talker with a whiny English accent. (He also has an assistant, Smeck, a toadying troll-like being of strictly limited intelligence.) At home is Bob's wife Donna, teenage daughter Megan and young son Andy.
Handled with a lighter-than-air touch, God, The Devil And Bob was an innocuous, witty and thoughtful enterprise which, bafflingly, caused a real stir in the USA, enough for it to be yanked off the air by NBC after just four episodes. In the UK all 13 were screened by BBC2, proving to be engaging and entertaining fun. The voice cast were uniformly good, and were supplemented by major guest stars (Elizabeth Taylor, Sarah Michelle Geller, Kevin Bacon and others).
Researched and written by Mark Lewisohn.
