Big Barry's Grub 'n' Firewater -- what a great restaurant!

When I was a kid, we would eat there regularly. They sold steaks by the ounce, and served most of the dishes in gold-panning pans. There was a player piano and saloon style doors to the bathrooms. One wall had an enormous mural of the Old West and the owner would walk around and talk to the customers...only he was like 4'6" tall and wore a ten gallon hat!

They were located on Long Island, NY. Two locations I think. This was back in like 1975-1985.

Great times. Here is a pic I found on the internet...sadly, we didn't take any pictures there and they have since closed. Then again, from the style of the clothes it looks like this family could have passed for us.

Wow. That does look cool. There was a similar place near me called the Ground Round. They had old pickle barrels full of peanuts you could scoop out. You just dropped the shells on the floor. I'm going to have to dig up the pictures of birthday parties I had there.

Holy Cow! That is tickling my memory...I am going to look that up and see if that's a place we used to eat at too!

I doubt we're thinking of the same place, but where was this? There was a restaurant a town over from me called the Ground Round, but I don't remember the peanut thing.
These aren't my rules. Come to think of it, I don't have any rules.

The Ground Round I went to was in Olympia Fields, IL. At the corner of Lincoln Highway (Route 30) and Western Avenue. There's a Blockbuster Video there now. They tore the old place down years ago. They later reopened the Ground Round in Matteson, IL. The place wasn't the same. No peanuts this time.

Big Barry's just reminded me of it with the look and all. I'd love to see the inside of the restaurant too.

I wish I had more pictures, too. It was such a great place and we had fond memories but no photos!

Yeah I ate at this place once in the 90s when I was little. I'm from Long Island too so I know a lot about the island.
