You know, like back in '89 when the Tim Burton movie came out, and everyone and his mother had a Batman T-shirt? It was so huge, and yet it's one of the 80s fads that rarely seems to get mentioned. I mean, VH-1 did three versions of "I love the 80s" and it never got brought up ONCE.

I remember it well, I was about 11 at the time. My brothers, who collected comics, became Batman fans when Frank Miller did "The Dark Knight Returns", and I thought the idea of seeing a dark and badass Batman was pretty cool. So we were all really excited to watch it, and in my opinion at the time, it completely lived up to expectations. Loved it. That summer, I got Batman caps, Batman T-shirts, etc. It was like the rest of the non-comic book world was finally catching up to what Batman was really like- a dark crimefighter, not some guy in a campy tv show.

IMO, the Burton movie doesn't really hold up now, especially since Batman Begins came out and may have become the best superhero movie ever. But at the time it was a pretty big experience.

I honestly think the Burton Batman was better than Batman Begins. Maybe it's because I grew up with Burton's version, I don't know. Micheal Keaton, in my opinion, is the best incarnation of Batman.

But yeah, I remember the Batman fad. I think every guy in my class had a Batman shirt. The Batman cereal was the coolest part of it all, though. Didn't each box come with a bowl or something like that?

I totally remember this.... i was about 5 or 6 at the time and i remember.. having a batman wallet (i was so proud of the 3 dollars i had in it).. it had the batsignal printed all over it, with the velcro (what 80s wallet didnt have velcro).. i even had the buttons and sent my mom in a frenzy looking for the batman toys (the joker that sprayed water from the lipel and the batman that had the grappling hook connected to the utility belt..

Hell, I remember the hype that was surrounding it before it came out. Believe it or don't, there were actually people who said things like, "What? You're casting Michael 'Mr. Mom' Keaton instead of Adam West? That's SACRILEGE!" But, of course, once it came out, everyone shut up about that immediately.

I was in middle school at the time. Kids wore Batman shirts, brought Batman comics and toys to class and we used to talk about the movie everyday in class. On the Friday that the movie came out, our teacher let us out early so we can go see the movie.

I agree. I don't like Christian Bale as Batman, he makes him way too intense. He is a really good Bruce Wayne though. I also don't like the way they make Gotham. Tim Burton had to create Gotham City and it looked amazing. While Nolan is just filming it in Chicago and there are some shots where you can tell it is Chicago. I even saw certain buildings from Chicago in the Dark Knight trailer and it really annoys me that it isn't really "dark."

And everyone was saying it was the best Batman ever! I finally saw Batman Begins on FX last week, and it defiently was good, but like Derk it's cause of my nostalgia that I still like the original more. After all this was what gave the world the darker, serious Batman we all know him as. Maybe that's the same reason I still like Batman Forever, which is kind of a guilty pleasure cause of Schumacher's goofiness, though Batman & Robin is too stupid for even me to sit through anymore.

I liked Batman and Robin and Batman Forever. I know some say those are the worst movies of the series but i found the cast to be more believable, i never saw Batman Begins but the cast didn't look to believable, i can't see Katie holmes in movies for some reason she is just the chick from Dawsons Creek, i see her more as a T.V. person and Cristian Bale is one of those people who i couldn't put a face to his name, even if i saw other films with him in them.

I do! i was 7 at the time, i remembered all the frenzy of the movie going on. It was the first movie i ever saw at the theater when i first arrived in Albuquerque to live there and i loved it, i became a batman fan instantly and had some of the merchandise like action figures especially of that joker who's face can turn white to regular by water, a movie magazine on it, trading cards and T-shirt. I even played the video game for the nintendo system and i also ate the cereal, i also watched the campy 60's show on the family channel.

Sure i think "Begins" maybe the better Batman movie but i will always believe 1989's Batman is great in it's own right.

I was a rising highschool freshman when Burton's Batman came out. I remember the hype was almost out of control. We had to sit on the floor at the front of the theater when we went to see it the place was so packed...and I'm willing to bet we saw the film ten times or more that summer.

As far as the fads go...I also remember a kid at my highschool vowing to wear a Batman t-shirt to school every day of the school year...and I'll be damned if he did it!

Here's the thing though, I recently went back and rewatched Burton's Batman and I've got to say...the film just doesn't hold up. To be honest, it felt just about as campy as the Adam West series that preceeded it. Just in a more "pulp" or "noir" style.

Not to mention the fact that Nicolson's Joker was so grating and over the top it virtually made it unwatchable. For as far as I'm concerned...Burton's film should've been called 'Joker' rather than "Batman"....(however in truth the actual title of the film was the bat logo...not the word 'Batman' at all)

I love Burton's work...but in retrospect it just felt...stilted. At the time though...when we were all starved for ANYTHING that ressembled a great comic book film...it was the holy grail!

I for one find Chris Nolan's Batman Begins to be a far superior film.

I remember the "Batman" craze!! I LOVED "Batdance" by Prince. My friend's little brother had a Batman themed room after that came out.

Is "Begins" really for fans? i mean you can't compare 1989's Batman to "Begins", they are two seperate and different movies.

What do you mean is it for fans? Most purists will tell you they much prefer Nolan's film over Burton's.

I was in 6th grade when that movie came out. I remember having a bunch of different Batman shirts and my friends and I would compete to see who had the coolest one. And i remember girls wearing Batman earrings and dudes getting the bat logo shaved into their heads. At the time i thought that movie was the best but as time went on i realized that movie shoulda been called "The Joker". Batman Begins will always be the definitive Batmovie for me.

Face it folks, without this important movie there'd be no future for comic book movies or the animated show or the new 2000 cinematic franchise.

Afterall the "Superman" film franchise crashed and burned with "Quest For Peace" and Warner Bros. really needed a new hit superhero franchise to fill in their shoes and wallah this came along.
