DVDs started coming out in 1997 so I guess they could be considered somewhat retro. My family was a relatively late adopter in the DVD technolgy as we didn't get our first DVD player until 2003. The first movie my family bought was Daddy Day Care and I can't begin to tell you how many times we watched it. The first movie I bought for myself on DVD was Predator Full Screen edition (Ugh...full screen...how naive I was).
That was almost six years ago in May and since then I've collected about 100 of my own DVDs and combined with my family we have about 200 or so total. I've replaced every movie I had on VHS and then some and via friends and family I've discovered plenty of new and fun movies on DVD over the years. Some of my most prized DVDs are my Star Wars Trilogy box set, my Alien boxset, and my Sonic SatAM boxset. With the advent of Bluray and other Hi-Def formats, the DVD as a primary video format may be in trouble in the next five to ten years and then we'll have to buy everything all over again. It doesn't matter if DVDs are Bluray compatible, DVDs are inevitably going to be phased out and it will be a sad day as a movie buff. Even if that does happen, I will hold on to my collection as long as there is support for the DVD technology.

Pretty much how my copy looks except its region 1 and it says "Full Screen Collection" or something to that effect on the top of the front cover.
