Yes, I remember now. By the late 80's Burger King used to do a 99 cent Whopper promo every year. I remember when my next-door neighbor stopped at the restaurant and asked my manager about it. Yes, every year until the early 90's when sales summaries bore the bad news.
There was a recap in "Ad Age" magazine showing that Whopper sales bottomed both before and after each 99 cent promo! Meaning that people would gorge on sale priced burgers but were not buying at the menu price. The 99 cent promos were costing BK sales, not generating new business. Cheap Whopper eaters stayed away until the next promotion!
As I recall that was around '92 or '93 and BK ended the annual 99 cent Whopper sale, yet brought it back twice ('95 and '97 ?) to promo some new addition to the regular menu or some product
tie-ins around a hot movie or something.
Notice how the Mc Donald's dollar menu was a better sales tool. It's always there and repeat business is what this game is all about.
