I remember when they would have a sale on them for 99 cents so I'm sure at one point they were.

In 1985 I was unemployed, no one would hire me with an accounting degree but no experience.

So I was grateful to land a job with Burger King. It was a brand-new restaurant and for the first month, all Whoppers (no cheese) were 99 cents.

After that, 99 cent Whopper national promos seem to be a regular sales gimmick.

Wasn't there a huge 99 cent Whopper campaign in 1997?

Yes, I remember now. By the late 80's Burger King used to do a 99 cent Whopper promo every year. I remember when my next-door neighbor stopped at the restaurant and asked my manager about it. Yes, every year until the early 90's when sales summaries bore the bad news.

There was a recap in "Ad Age" magazine showing that Whopper sales bottomed both before and after each 99 cent promo! Meaning that people would gorge on sale priced burgers but were not buying at the menu price. The 99 cent promos were costing BK sales, not generating new business. Cheap Whopper eaters stayed away until the next promotion!

As I recall that was around '92 or '93 and BK ended the annual 99 cent Whopper sale, yet brought it back twice ('95 and '97 ?) to promo some new addition to the regular menu or some product
tie-ins around a hot movie or something.

Notice how the Mc Donald's dollar menu was a better sales tool. It's always there and repeat business is what this game is all about.

In the 80's all through til like 2002 Whoppers was 99 cents everyday at a Burger King about 30mins from me. I'd stop in there all the time lol.

              And thereby hangs a tale.
Like all fast food places, some are corporate owned and some are franchise operations.
The menu price varies from store to store. Some parts of the country rarely saw one dollar Whoppers, others saw it too often. A "top-line" product should carry a price to match. McDonald's got it right, let the dollar menu handle the budget buyers.
