well i think it's a mutation of a combination of things. "scene" is because ideally they're the ones who hang out at the music venues together "the music scene" kinda like punk rock but with less to do with the music and more to do with being seen in your new black skinnyleg jeans. the hairstyle is a derivative of emo probably, and so is a lot of the music, hardcore with emo roots. so i dunno, to me the scene always seemed like a bunch of really confused kids who haven't figured out who they are yet...so they just grab on to whatever their friends are doing. and i can't really criticize them for that because it's not their fault, they just want to be accepted. it's like any other thing but it just seems like the media picked up more on this one, so it's become more of a big deal than it actually is. i feel bad for anyone who gets made fun of though, whether it be goth or scene or punk or whatever. usually dies mid-college anyway!
