Growing up it was like you thoght of SS, automatically you thought of Big Bird. I asked some kids today if they watched Sesame Street, of course they looked at me blank at first (sad isnt it)?, then i showed them the logo, and whos name do they utter, Elmo. ive notcied this a while back at the store, a majority of the SS merchandise has Elmos face plastered on it, in fact he has his own display at the party favor stores. Does anyone know why hes the big character now?

I know, I've thought of this as well.

Pretty bad when Big Bird gets pushed around on his own turf, hopefully Oscar The Grouch will grab that little perv Elmo by the throat & drag him down into his trash-can and beat the shit out of him.

"Sesame Street" basically is now called "Elmo's World featuring the Sesame Street Gang".

This happened in 1997 when Tickle-Me Elmo came.

          I'd rather see Tickle-Me Emo!

It's not just when Tickle-Me Elmo came out that he started to gain popularity. It was more around the early 90s when Elmo appeared more frequently and they introduced characters like Zoe and Rosita Monster. So I was a little kid when Elmo was already gaining popularity.

I never did have a problem with the character, and like Shazbot said, it's because kids love Elmo that makes him a more frequent character.

Yes, it's "Elmo's World" in all but name, for now.

Elmo is all cute and cuddly, that is why people like him more than Big Bird. It is true....the Tickle me Elmo put him in the spot light.

Well, if toy makers like Mad TV, they should really sell this one.

"Sesame Streets" Elmo became popular when male boys lost their dicks.

For everyone who is saying Tickle-Me-Elmo came out in 1997...it was actually 1996. Christmas of '96 was the one where everyone was going nuts for that thing. The Nintendo 64 was the other big Christmas present everyone was after that year.

Hehe I liked Barney when he was just on home video and not on PBS yet ;)

Yeah Elmo became popular quite a bit before that Tickle Me Elmo came out because I remember an episode of the original Torklesons where Elmo guest starred and that was before '93

Elmo is just the kind of character that children love and what keeps the show going, and we should all respect that. And I'll tell you one thing, Elmo's World is not going anywhere. The reason why they added it in the first place was because in the late 90s, research showed that kids got bored of the show around the 45-minute mark, and they obviously needed something to keep the kids watching for the full hour. Since Elmo started gaining huge popularity at the time, the producers decided to dedicate the last 20 minutes of the show to Elmo. Thus, Elmo's World was born!

I remember seeing Elmo as a secondary character when I watched Sesame Street in the mid 1980s through 1992. So I figure he became increasingly popular in the early 90s.
