Do you ever go to the grocery store and buy imitation food brands like Smarties Candy, which is exactly like Sweet Tarts Candy?

Sweet Tarts.

Smarties.

I never knew Smarties were considered a knockoff.

I did thread about this in the retro section awhile back.

I tend to buy the national brand because the stuff I buy doesn't have a generic equivalent. When possible though I always buy generic because it's just a good or better......usually.

I was raised on generic store-brands. Except for the off chance a Name Brand has a better sale.

The best examples we ever had was a Sour Patch Kids knock off called Sour Rude Dudes (kept us laughing for days) and at our wedding reception we bought Admiral Nelson instead of Captain Morgan.

Dude... Smarties came out in 1949, sweet tarts came out in 1963. Sweet tarts are the knockoff.
...Additionally, smarties are always small candies, while sweet tarts are normally(always?) larger (about twice the diameter & 1.5x the thickness).

When I was a kid we got these literally "generic" (anyone remember when there were literal "generic" products on shelves?) candy rolls. The were the same diameter as life savers, but had a dip in the middle instead of a hole. Unlike the cheapass imitation lifesavers you find in dollar stores these days, these "generic" life savers came in about 6 different flavors, and (most importantly) they were delicious (the dollar store crap tastes like solidified urine).
I especially loved the grape flavored ones. They were only on the shelves for a short time though, I'd love to know who actually manufactured them & ifd they still make any similar products.

I also tried some store brands at times. Everytime I am at
the grocery store there seems to knockoffs of Frosted Flakes.
(Frosted Wheaties,Frosted Snacks,Frosted Os,EVEN Frosted Flakes!) Its like Kellogs didn't even trade mark the name.

                        Smarties.

This is very interesting to me.

There are actually two kinds of Smarties. In the USA, Smarties are a sweet/sour tablet candy that's sold in Europe and Canada under a different name so as not to be confused with Chocolate Smarties, (Nestle's), sort of a European M&M's candy coated chocolate.

I first learned of UK Smarties from an episode of The Benny Hill Show.

Or Dr. K from Kroger. Mr Pibb while not generic is a Coca Cola Rip off of Dr. Pepper introduced in 1972. Since I was a little kid Mr Pibb always upset my stomach and I have never been able to drink it. I stopped drinking Dr. Pepper in the 90s after the flavor changed. It wasn't the switch from cane to high fructose corn syrup because that happened in the 80s. There is a bottler in Texas that still uses cane sugar, maybe I'll give it a try. I know Mexican Coke taste better for this reason.

Generic Soda is something I have never been a fan of though.

And I thought it was just my imagination. Dr. Pepper dosen't taste right. So there was a reformulation back in the 90's huh? So much for refreshment at 10 - 2 and 4.
