Mabel King was born December, 25 1932 in Charleston, South Carolina, USA
under the birth name "Donnie Mabel Elizabeth Washington", where she
grew up to become a very talented and successful actress and musician.
You most likely will remember Mabel King for her role as
"Momma" in the 1976-79 ABC sitcom "What's
Happening", or as Nathan Johnson's (Steve Martin) Mom in the
classic 1979 comedy "The Jerk", but most of you probably did
not know that this gentle, soft spoken, and beautiful woman was also a talented singer/recording artist in the mid-'50s.
King also performed in the 1978 musical "The Wiz",
co-starring with Michel Jackson, Diana Ross, and Richard Pryor where she played the Wicked Witch of the West (name of Evillene)
in this musical remake of the Wizard of Ozz.
King would have worked more in the later years of her career if it wasn't for
here failing health. Diabetes eventually cost her both her legs, and a stroke damaged her left
hand, forcing her to live in a Hospital for the last 9 years of her life where
she finally died of complications from diabetes on November 9, 1999 in Woodland Hills,
California at the age of 66. King remained a positive thinker, and a
fighter till the end. When she was asked by the Los Angeles Times in 1995
about her health problems, King replied ""Sure enough, I've been through a
lot, but so what? ... I thank God for my life."
